Rivalry Week in college football is known for thrilling matchups and heightened emotions, but it also brought an alarming pattern of conflicts at the end of last year’s season.
On November 30, 2024, three separate flag-planting incidents sparked on-field fights, some more severe than others. From the University of Florida vs. Florida State flag-planting incident to the University of Michigan vs. Ohio State brawl, these events raised serious concerns about sportsmanship and respect among college athletes.
The University of Florida vs. Florida State flag-planting incident occurred after Florida’s victory over Florida State when a Gators player planted the UF flag at the center of FSU’s field directly on the Seminole head logo. The act immediately triggered a fight, prompting Florida State’s Head Coach Mike Norvell to intervene. Norvell removed the flag and confronted the University of Florida’s Head Coach, Billy Napier.
Addressing this confrontation afterward, Norvell commented:
They won the game. They have the right to celebrate, just like we have in previous years. It was just the way that we operate. And that’s fine—you want to come and do that, that is absolutely a decision you can have within a team. I just told him [Napier] what I thought.

A similar incident occurred during Arizona State’s 49-7 blowout win over the University of Arizona. Following the game, a Sun Devils player attempted to plant a pitchfork flag at midfield, leading to a brief skirmish quickly broken up by coaches.
The University of Michigan vs. Ohio State game saw the most explosive reaction, however.
After Michigan’s win, Wolverines players planted their flag on Ohio State’s field, sparking an all-out brawl.
This wasn’t a minor altercation; rather, it escalated into a violent melee involving players, coaches, and even law enforcement, who had to use pepper spray to break it up. The aftermath left some players bloodied and bruised, and as mentioned in an article in Fox Sports, the Big Ten Conference fined both programs $100,000 for their roles in the melee.
In a statement, the Big Ten condemned the unsportsmanlike conduct by noting the following:
Not only did the actions of both teams violate fundamental elements of sportsmanship such as respect and civility, but the nature of the incident also jeopardized the safety of participants and bystanders.
This all cumulates into a troubling trend of disrespect and unsportsmanlike behavior.
If sports serve any educational benefit, it would be to foster teamwork and leadership skills. However, when teams escalate competition into violence, it puts doubt on the benefits of these programs and smears university names.

Unsportsmanlike behavior contradicts the values universities are supposed to instill in their students. The fallout from these events extends beyond the field, negatively affecting the universities’ public image, recruiting efforts, and relationships with fans and alumni. Ultimately, these incidents serve as a reminder that sportsmanship must remain at the heart of competition. Rivalries may heighten emotions, but respect and integrity should never be sacrificed in pursuing victory.
To address these issues, several initiatives can be implemented. Mandatory sportsmanship training for athletes involved in unsportsmanlike conduct and suspensions for flag-planting incidents would set clear expectations. Universities could also entirely prohibit flag-planting at opponents’ stadiums. Or they could bypass all of this and simply let go of unruly players.
Recruiting athletes with maturity and self-discipline is equally important. College players should arrive with a foundation in sportsmanship developed long before their collegiate careers. And scouts recruiting these athletes should better spot character while assessing talent.
Protecting the integrity of college athletics requires a united effort from universities, conferences, and fans to ensure rivalry games remain spirited but respectful, avoiding disrespect or violence.
